Hamlin Garland Award for the Short Story

$2,000 and publication will be awarded to the top unpublished story on any theme. The winning story will appear in print and on our website.

Works Accepted

  • Maximum of 7,000 words.
  • Simultaneous submissions are acceptable.
  • All entrants will be considered for publication.

Reading Fee

A reading fee of $20 must accompany each entry. When applying by mail, please make checks payable to Beloit Fiction Journal. When submitting online, you will be prompted to pay electronically.

Submission Deadline

Postmark deadline for submission is November 25, 2020.


Michael Byers, author of Long for This World, has agreed to judge the Hamlin Garland Award this year.

While generally one story is chosen, the award may be split at the judge’s discretion.
