The Chelonia Dance Concert is Beloit College's annual mainstage dance performance. It includes student, faculty and guest artist choreography. It is an eclectic blend of dance styles and always has something for everyone!
Every year Beloit dance students and faculty travel to the American College Dance Festival Association's regional conference. Past conferences have been in various cities in Minnesota, Michigan, Illinois, Wisconsin and Iowa. At the conference students and faculty attend classes for 4 days and perform in adjudicated concerts as well as informal performances.
Dances choreographed by Beloit College students and faculty have been repeatedly selected for the gala concert at the end of the conference. In 2013 The Walls It Embraces, choreographed by Beloit dance major Mia Alcorn was selected for the gala at the University of Minnesota, Mankato. In 2011 Closure, choreographed by Beloit dance major Joey Hernandez, was selected for the gala at St Olaf College. In 2004 Get in the Ring, choreographed by Beloit senior Allisa-Zee Hartmann, was also chosen as an alternate for the national conference. Faculty choreographer Chris Johnson had her pieces, Held/Accountable (2005) and Holding Patterns (2003) selected for the gala and in 2001 Sunken Flight, choreographed by Beloit senior Heather Budd '01, was selected from over 50 works to be performed in the gala performance at the Krannert Center.
Every spring students self-produce a variety of dance performances in the new spaces of the Hendricks Center for the Arts as well as site specific work in places all over campus and the community such as the Wright Museum of Art, the Poetry Garden, the Center for the Sciences Garden and Atrium and the Water Tower Park. These performances range from avant garde reinterpretations of classic pieces like the Cinder Ella ballet, to evening length works presented as thesis pieces by dance majors, to a potpourri of student and faculty choreographed dances for an evening of revelry.
