In July 2014, two Beloit dancers, Sarah Ellen Miller’15 and Santiago Quintana’15 along with Professor of Dance Chris Johnson traveled to France and Belgium to give presentations, perform, take workshop classes, see performances and collaborate with international dance companies.
In Angers, France they participated in the World Dance Alliance Global Summit presented in partnership with Centre National de Danse Contemporaine at the Quai Forum des Arts Vivants theatre complex and the University of Angers. Chris Johnson presented on her recent work exploring power dynamics and gender.
Professor Johnson was also accepted to show her choreographic work, Physical Manifestations of Assent, danced by Sarah and Santiago at the WDA Global Summit in Angers. A video of the piece in rehearsal before the trip can be found here.
While in France they were also able to do some site seeing along the banks of La Maine river visiting the 13th Century fortress that houses the extraordinary Tapestry of the Apocalypse.
After WDA they traveled to Belgium and worked on a collaborative project with Company NOI under the direction of Valentina Nigro. They rehearsed in Brussels as well as Antwerp.
Company NOI is a group that the Beloit dancers made connections with at the New Prague Dance Festival in 2013.
