See what past opportunities Beloit College students participated in, learning, experiencing, and performing dance all around the country and internationally.
Chelonia Dance Company, Beloit College's resident dance group, performs their annual dance concert each spring in the Laura Aldrich Neese Theatre. The all-student company is directed by associate professor, Chris Johnson. Dances are presented from faculty, guest artists and student choreography.
Two of the pieces—one faculty/guest work and one student work—are chosen to be presented at the American College Dance Association (ACDA) regional festivals in the spring.
Beloit College provides additional opportunities for students to perform whenever possible such as with guest artists, in student produced concerts and the annual December Workshop showing of all student choreographed works.
Dancers have been featured in theatre productions such as Brigadoon, Love of the Nightingale, Jesus Christ Superstar, Guys and Dolls, and Rent.
Students with creative ideas for special performances, collaborations, and unique venues are encouraged to pursue their visions. Students regularly produce their own concerts, put together outdoor performances, collaborate with art and music students, and perform in areas throughout the campus. These performances vary from elaborately choreographed projects to collaborations with music students and late night shows in the C-Haus.
Dance students have contact with working professionals both on and off campus. The department regularly engages guest artists to work with students to create pieces, conduct workshops and produce performances.
Every year Beloit dance students and faculty travel to the American College Dance Association's (ACDA) regional conference. Past conferences have been in various cities in Michigan, Illinois, Wisconsin and Iowa. At the conference students and faculty attend classes for 4 days and perform in adjudicated concerts as well as informal performances.
Two of the dances from Chelonia, Beloit's annual dance concert—one faculty/guest work and one student work—are chosen to be presented at the American College Dance Association (ACDA) regional festivals each spring. Since 2001, Beloit's pieces have been regularly selected for the prestigious gala concerts at ACDA.
Students are encouraged to study abroad, esspecially programs which include or focus on dance experiences.
Off Campus Training
Beloit dance students often pursue dance training off campus. Each spring a group of Beloit dancers attends the American College Dance Festival to take classes and be adjudicated by dance professionals. Many Beloit dancers go to summer programs such as the American Dance Festival in Durham, NC, or do summer study in New York. Some of our dancers have earned scholarships for summer study and prestigious internships at these programs. Past and present dance students are actively involved in regional dance companies.
Students often do internships during the summer in a variety of locations such as New York City, Bates Dance Festival, and American Dance Festival. For instance, one student participated in a internship in the costume shop at the Reynolds Industries Theater for American Dance Festival.
