Trustee Bill Boyd'63 passes following battle with brain cancer

December 17, 2015

On Thursday, Dec. 17, the Beloit College community was alerted to loss of trustee and alumnus Bill Boyd'63. President Scott Bierman announced the news to students, faculty, and staff in a midday email. The complete text of the email is below. This post will be updated with more news as it becomes available.

Email to campus, Thursday Dec. 17 at 12:13 p.m.

Friends,

I’ve just learned that Beloit College trustee and alumnus Bill Boyd’63 has died. Bill, who joined the board in 2012, had been battling brain cancer since this summer and passed away while in hospice care, his family beside him.

Bill was among the greatest of Beloit citizens and a very good friend to many of us. We will miss him, his friendship, his contributions, and his enthusiasm for this college, which he loved so much.

Back in 2013, Bill was awarded the college’s Distinguished Service Citation—our alumni association’s highest honor. The citation details his many professional accomplishments, as well as his important and generous support offered to the college over the years. I hope you’ll have a look at this admiring document.

As I read it, I reflected back on the time of its conferring and reunion weekend. Even more revealing than this citation is the imprint Bill left on those proceedings. If you were on campus for reunion that year, you’d have seen Bill’s gifts and generosity in full and living color.

While some may expect that the college president presides over reunion—and yes, sometimes it happens—that was not the case in 2013. That year, Bill hosted—serving as welcome wagon and room warmer; cheerleader and college booster. And not only for his class, but for every class. Everyone who attended must have met Bill and left campus feeling better about their own connection as a result of their interactions with this electrifying man.

We will miss his presence and personality, his leadership, and his bottomless enthusiasm for Beloit—the one he knew, as well as the one he’d come to know today.

On December 29 at 2:00 p.m. a memorial service will be held at Myers Park Methodist Church in Charlotte, NC with a reception to follow.

Bill’s son Bob Boyd said in an earlier note to me that the December holiday season was Bill’s favorite time of year. It’s a time when we’re surrounded by people we love and those who love us. Bill enjoyed family and friends as much as anyone I have known. For me at least, Bill's life is an inspiration to pay close attention to those who matter most. Enjoy the company and the festivities.

Best,

Scott
