From the Middle: Facilities director hired; planning for fall trustees meeting; employee apparel guide introduced

September 11, 2013

Here in the middle of the week is the latest update on the goings-on in Middle College and the work of the college’s senior staff.

At its regular weekly meeting on Monday, the college’s senior staff spent the largest share of its time sculpting committee and full board agendas for the upcoming October meeting of the Board of Trustees. But before breaking after two hours together, the assembled group also got news of a recent new hire, intel on progress made in the search for a powerhouse architect, and a first look at a new employee apparel catalog.

Board of Trustees fall meeting planning in full swing
Dan Schooff, senior director of corporate relations and project lead on the powerhouse initiative, kicked off this week’s meeting with an update on discussions surrounding the college’s interest in the Blackhawk Generating Station, as well as the search underway for a national  architecture firm to design the facility. Three architectural firms were invited to campus, and by the time of this posting, two of those three will have visited with the search committee and other groups of students, faculty, and staff who are engaged in the project.

This update functioned as a lead in to an in-depth discussion of the many committee agendas taking shape for the fall trustee meeting, which will kick off on Thursday night, Oct. 3. Learning and Teaching will feature presentations from faculty members (all of whom also presented at this year’s Fall Conference) and discussions about classroom--that is, faculty--innovation. Others, like the Campaigns Committee and the Enrollment and Marketing Committee, are planning to touch on work underway in support of the college’s recruitment and fundraising efforts. In addition to these, it is expected that the Budget and Planning committee will receive and review a proposal for tuition, fees and room and board for the 2014-15 academic year, among other business items at the upcoming meeting.

A new Director of Facilities at Beloit
Vice President of Human Resources and Operations Lori Rhead, as a part of her discussion about her own committee agenda items, used Monday’s meeting to announce that the college had successfully attracted a new
director of facilities. The physical plant and housekeeping staffs learned yesterday (Tuesday) that Tom Viel, currently the deputy director of public works at the Village of Lake in the Hills, Ill., had accepted the position. Viel has strong experience in facilities management and in higher ed, having held positions at Rock Valley College, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville. He will join the college Sept. 23.

New apparel “lookbook” presented
The final item of business tackled Monday was the presentation of an “Employee Apparel Lookbook”-- a small catalog of uniform-style apparel prepared by the Office of Communications and Marketing, the Turtle Creek Bookstore, and the bookstore’s partner, Club Colors (an apparel and gift supplier). The catalog, which offers offices and departments an easy and affordable way to purchase faculty and staff apparel, will be distributed to office and departments within the next week or two.
