The news from Middle College: Salary letters coming, powerhouse RFP out (and available)

August 5, 2013 at 6:51 am

This fall and spring, the Terrarium will offer a regularly occurring post on the goings-on in Middle College, offering Beloiters an inside look at what’s being discussed in senior staff and tackled in the offices of the president, provost and dean of students, admissions, development,  finance and planning, human resources and operations, and information services and resources.

Museums office coordinator job description approved
During a special Wednesday meeting last week, senior staff approved the job description for the Logan and Wright Museums’ office coordinator. The part-time position is newly vacant after Becky Moffett won the academic program coordinator role for Morse-Ingersoll Hall, a position that came open after the retirement of Eula Buchanan in May. Know anyone who's interested in the museums position? Point them to the online listing, which should be appearing shortly on the staff positions page.

VP for finance lays out assessment of budget
At the meeting, Laurie Stickelmaier, the new vice president for finance and planning, also laid out her early assessment of the college budget for the coming year and shared the financials from the academic year just passed. Laurie, who arrived from the College of Wooster in mid-July, has been working with the Accounting Office and senior staff to close the books on 12-13 and get the new budgets up and online for departments/offices. At the end of her report, President Bierman opened a conversation about this year’s increase in the faculty-staff compensations pool, based on the budget presented and reports on tuition revenue and health insurance increases, which were brought forward by Nancy Benedict and Lori Rhead.

Salary letters out later this month
Ultimately, senior staff discussed and approved a salary pool increase that will be finalized shortly. Salary letters will, as a result (and as usual), be distributed later this month. For the first time in several years, those letters will include news that the college’s health care premium increased this year and that those employees using the college’s health insurance will see an increase beginning this fall. The letters, which will arrive in home mailboxes, will have all the details.

Powerhouse RFP
Rounding out the latest senior staff meeting was an update on the powerhouse project. Dean of Students Christina Klawitter shared the Request for Proposals (RFP) that a committee of faculty, staff, students, and board of trustees members recently distributed to a carefully selected group of architects. The committee has been vetting potential partners for months, Klawitter said, and recently removed one finalist from its consideration list. The five carefully selected firms that remain are being asked to respond to the RFP. Those firms that do so are expected to be on campus Sept. 9-11 to present some early ideas, get to know the campus community, and flaunt their capabilities for faculty, staff, and students. Watch for more details as the semester dawns. In the meantime, the RFP is available online for students, staff, and faculty to review (your Beloit login and password will be required).
