Meet: Ben Vogt’14 (catch him in Voodoo Barbie Friday!)

January 31, 2013

You can see Ben and the rest of Voodoo Barbie in their first performance of the season FRIDAY (Feb. 1) at 10 p.m.

Ben Vogt 2

Name: Ben Vogt’14 (left, above).

Hometown: Appleton, Wis.

Major/minor: Computer science and theatre performance.

What brought me to Beloit: Everyone was really nice, genuinely interested in learning, and it seemed like a place where you could build an education rather than just get one, if that makes sense.

My favorite class so far, and why you should take it: Untangling The Wire, because it was a great class about an awesome show, taught by a different professor each week.

You may have seen me: In Voodoo Barbie, Beloit’s only (and best) improv troupe.

The best book I’ve read at Beloit: I recently read “Clybourne Park” by Bruce Norris, and I really liked it.

What are you working on? I’m working on combining computer science and theatre performance by creating an application that uses a motion-capture camera to capture actors in real time to generate live special effects for theatre. Sort of like Tupac at Coachella but without the hologram thing and about half as bumpin’.

What’s on your desert island jukebox?  John Williams, because I’d like to have a grandiose score while I’m building my raft.

What’s on your Beloit College bucket list? Create something that changes Beloit for the better. I don’t know what that is yet.

Who are your top-three fantasy dinner party guests? Benjamin Franklin, Bill Bryson, and Michael Crichton.

Proudest moment? Someone once told me that I did a pretty good Pope impression at a Voodoo Barbie show. Is it weird that that was my proudest moment?

What’s your karaoke standard? “Tiny Dancer” by Elton John.
