Internet might be momentarily interrupted early Wednesday

January 22, 2013

Information Technology staff will be upgrading the technology used to manage the campus Internet bandwidth today (Wednesday, Jan. 23). This activity will begin at 7 a.m. and will be completed by 8 a.m. During this time, IT anticipates a disruption of Internet service of approximately five minutes during that hour; however, if there are unforeseen circumstances, the disruption could be longer.

IT's goal is to provide adequate bandwidth for the campus community with an emphasis on academic needs. To support these needs, we have conducted research on bandwidth usage in academic locations and have configured this new technology to guarantee bandwidth for academic purposes during key times of day based on that usage. Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. until 6 p.m., academic locations will be guaranteed 50mbps of bandwidth; Monday through Friday, 6 p.m. until 10 p.m.,  academic locations will be guaranteed 30 mbps of bandwidth. The bandwidth management technology is configured to manage the college's 150 mbps of bandwidth and provide additional bandwidth for academic purposes beyond these guaranteed amounts if needed.

IT will continue to monitor Internet traffic very closely after this new technology is put in place. However, your input is also very important to this process. If you should experience any performance issues with the Internet, please contact the IT Help Desk (ext. 2067/ immediately so that IT staff can research the issues and make adjustments as necessary.

Finally, please stay tuned for a future announcement about an increase in overall bandwidth available to campus. IT is very excited about an increase that is presently in the works and will share more information about it when available!
