New faces in food service; dining spaces get made over

By the end of this week, dining operations on campus will have made the switch from Beloit College Dining Services to Bon Appetit. Already, you may have seen some new faces on campus.

Pictured below, General Manager Ken Hnilo, left, and Executive Chef Jonna Froelich have already been on campus for nearly a month, setting up vendors, planning, and keeping track of the many stray details that come with this sort of transition process. Though new to the process, the two have shared kitchen counter space in the past, having worked together at nearby Big Foot Country Club and at Hnilo’s Gilbert’s Restaurant in Lake Geneva, Wis.

The official changeover date is Friday (June 15), at which point Commons, D.K.’s, and the Java Joint will undergo striking changes and quite a bit of construction. Last week, on-campus students and staff were treated to some previews of proposed meal plans and decorating ideas for the campus’s three main dining areas.

Other items to note:

  • D.K.’s will be the meal spot for the rest of the summer, with operations beginning  Tuesday (June 12)
  • D.K.’s hours this summer (subject to change as campus populations are in flux; those changes will be communicated): Monday through Friday, breakfast will run 7 a.m.-8:30 a.m.; lunch 11:30 a.m.-1:15 p.m.; dinner 5 p.m. to 6:15 p.m. On Saturday and Sunday, brunch will be served from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m., with dinner from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Faculty and staff can get a free cup of coffee this Tuesday through Friday—stop by and meet the team! Staff and faculty will also receive discounted meal prices all summer ($2 continental breakfasts, $4.50 for a soup-salad-beverage lunch)
