Beloit dancers perform in Chicago Sunday; tickets, info

April 3, 2014

Despite the 254 miles separating Beloit and Grinnell College, the student-run dance groups, Beloit College Dance Company and Grinnell College Dance Ensemble/ACTivate, will collaborate on a full-length performance, Sudden Spring, Sunday, April 6 at the Ruth Page Center for the Arts in downtown Chicago.

Using the Distance Dances method of collaborative choreography, developed by co-founders Gina T’ai, adjunct assistant professor of dance at Beloit College, and Susan Honer, independent dance artist based in Dayton, Ohio, students will construct a series of dances. Replacing studio rehearsals with online video posts, the dancers interacted remotely right up until this weekend, when they will meet and merge the generated material into cohesive dances just days before the performance. The process can be followed at Each company will also perform a dance piece of their own repertory.

The show will take place Sunday at 2 p.m. General admission is $12, with student and senior tickets available for $6. Tickets can be purchased online, by phone, or on site at the Ruth Page Box Office, located at 1016 N Dearborn St., Chicago, Ill.

Limited parking is available around the Ruth Page Center for the Arts. Visit for more information, ticket sales, and a list of nearby discount parking.

The college will have a bus for 28-30 students leaving Beloit at 9:30 a.m. for the show, though the bus was nearly full earlier this week. The ticket must be paid in advance, and the bus will leave from the Wall Sunday at 9:30 a.m., and return around 6 p.m. Interested parties can e-mail to see if there are still spaces available.
