College, Kerry host annual family-oriented science night

November 4, 2013

The second annual Family Discovery Night scheduled for Friday (Nov. 8) will see the return of the popular robots and sheep brains along with several new interactive activities for children of all ages. Free and open to the public, the event takes place from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. primarily in the Beloit College Center for the Sciences.

Family Discovery Night is a joint venture between Beloit College and Kerry Ingredients & Flavours, with the former hosting it and the latter serving as the exclusive sponsor. This year, Kerry donated $20,000 to fund Family Discovery Night 2013 and the 2014 Girls and Women in Science event taking place April 4-5.

The event is an interactive evening of science, the arts, discovery, fun, prizes, and food that gives families the opportunity to learn side-by-side with Beloit College faculty and Kerry scientists. In addition to engaging with robots and dissecting sheep brains, kids and their families will participate in a variety of activities while collecting passport stamps along the way.

One of the new activities this year is The Sky from Scratch astronomy show where audience members create their own stories and constellations to make sense of the night sky. Led by Assistant Professor of Theatre Arts John Kaufmann, the 25-minute shows take place at 6:30 p.m. and 7:15 p.m. in Wilson Theatre. Tickets (at no cost) are required and may be picked up in the Center for the Sciences prior to the show.

Also new this year is a sustainability activity, as well as hands-on activities and a scavenger hunt at the Logan Museum of Anthropology, a short walk across campus from the Center for the Sciences. Volunteers from the Roy Chapman Andrews Society will assist with the Logan activities.

Families should first arrive at the Center for the Sciences. For more information on Family Discovery Night and a map with parking options, visit
