Pushcart Prize-nominated poet on campus, one week from today

Derrick Harriell

Poet Derrick Harriell will visit Beloit College on Thursday, Nov. 7 to read from his new collection, Ropes. The public reading, in addition to a talk about his work, will take place at 7 p.m. in the courtyard of the Wright Museum of Art.

Born and raised in Milwaukee, Harriell worked as an assistant poetry editor for Third World Press and is currently the poetry editor for The Cream City Review. A 2009 Pushcart nominee, his poems have appeared in various literary journals and anthologies. Cotton is his first collection of poems.

Ropes explores the lives of historic African American fighters Jack Johnson, Joe Louis, Joe Frazier and Mike Tyson, including their roles as fathers, brothers, husbands, and activists.
