Meet: Hayley Barnett’16, who’s got her sights set on a conference win

April 1, 2013

Name: Hayley Barnett’16

Hayley Barnett 3

Hometown: New York City, N.Y.

Major/minor: Completely and totally undecided.

What brought me to Beloit: Pretty much the same reason most of us are here; I wanted a small liberal arts school that would challenge me intellectually. I wanted to be able to enjoy my classes without feeling like I was just another face in the crowd.

My favorite class so far, and why you should take it: Professor Majeed’s Sex, Culture, and Religion: Readings from Morocco. Not only is Professor Majeed one of the most engaging, thought-provoking teachers here at Beloit, but the class also had a great range of readings and very interesting and controversial discussions. Also Professor Majeed is basically a hilarious, awesome person.

You may have seen me: In the fieldhouse practicing with the softball team! It’s my first year on the team (and at Beloit), and I’m really diggin’ it.

The best book I’ve read at Beloit: Secret Son by Laila Lalami (coincidentally in Professor Majeed’s class).

What are you working on? Balancing my academic life with my softball/other personal interest life. I like to write poetry and short fiction stories in my spare time as well.

What’s on your desert island jukebox? “Decatur” by Sufjan Stevens, definitely. I also like the Magnetic Fields a lot.

What’s on your Beloit College bucket list? Definitely to win conference. We have some great girls on the softball team this year, and I have a great feeling about this year and the coming years as our freshmen grow older and more experienced. A conference win is definitely in our future!

Favorite meal? I really like my grandmother’s potato croquets. Generally, I look forward to our Christmas Eve meal, which consists of nine different types of fish.

What can’t you live without? Books. Specifically my Complete Works of William Shakespeare.

Any advice? If you don’t want it, it won’t happen.

What do you do in your free time? What do you wish you did in your free time? In my free time I probably sleep or write or blast some music. I wish I cleaned my room in my free time.

Who are your top-three fantasy dinner party guests? William Shakespeare, without a question. Then probably ee cummings, because I admire his poetry and Eleanor Roosevelt because she seemed like a sassy broad.

What gets you up in the morning? My alarm, first. But every day as I leave my room I look up at a quote by Muhammad Ali above my door that always wakes me up and motivates me.

Who are your heroes? Monica Abbott, a professional softball pitcher. Not only did she play in the 2008 Olympics but she was also the first NCAA Div I pitcher in history to strike out 500 batters. She’s also a lefty and can pitch a pineapple off of someone’s head! Also Tina Fey, for her sarcasm and approach to feminism.

What’s your favorite hidden gem here in the area? Little Mexico has the best burritos ever.

What are you most looking forward to? The rest of my four years here at Beloit, and kicking butt this season and seasons to come!
