The Beloit College baseball and softball teams escaped the snow and cold as they kicked off their seasons last week in sunny Florida over spring break.
The baseball team suffered defeats by Loras College and Coe College before winning 8-6 against Eastern Mennonite University last Tuesday. The Bucs scored their next win on Saturday when they swept Becker College, winning 9-1 and 12-11.
The baseball team next plays Wisconsin Lutheran College in Milwaukee on Saturday, March 23 before playing its first home game against the Milwaukee School of Engineering on Sunday, March 24.
"We feel very good about our trip to Florida," says Head Baseball Coach Dave DeGeorge. "The week served as a great team-building experience and we improved as a baseball team. Our inexperience on the field showed early in the week, but we improved every day and by the end of the week, we were playing well. Again in 2013, I think our team can compete at the top of the Midwest Conference."
After some initial setbacks, the softball team scored its first win of spring break last Thursday when it defeated Westminster College 8-7. The Bucs finished up their trip with a pair of close losses last Friday, falling to Roger Williams University 2-1 and Webster University 4-2.
Softball Head Coach Kim Zarling says the trip gave her team the chance to solidify.
"I thought that the softball team made some steady improvements throughout the week at the Rebel Spring Games, we went to Florida as a bunch of individuals and came home as a team," Zarling says. "It was a great learning opportunity; we identified strengths and weaknesses and now have an opportunity to come home and spend some time before conference season putting the pieces together. Great outlook for year with a very talented group of underclassmen."
The softball team’s next game was scheduled for this Saturday, but has since been canceled due to weather conditions—namely, snow-covered fields.
While the baseball and softball teams were in Florida, the men’s lacrosse team played two games in Georgia. Oglethorpe University and Piedmont College defeated the Bucs 9-8 and 14-6, respectively.
The men’s lacrosse team’s first home game is Saturday at 1 p.m. against DePauw University; the women will play Sunday at 11 a.m. against Fontbonne.
