James Lazarcik’14, a 6’5 junior forward for the Beloit College men’s basketball team from La Crescent, Minn., has been named to the Second Team on the Capital One Academic All-American Team, selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America.
The designation is “a pretty big deal,” says Beloit College Sports Information Director Terry Owens. “The team is nominated and voted on by sports information directors across the nation, not just in the region. That means James' grade point, major and statistics were impressive enough to have people who have never heard of him take notice. It's really a great thing for James and Beloit College nationally.”
To be eligible for Academic All-American consideration a student athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.30, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing and be nominated by the institution’s sports information director. Only First Team Academic All-District selections are eligible for Academic All-American honors.
Lazarcik led the team in 13 different categories this past season, including scoring (17.5), rebounding (11.3), field goal percentage (67.7%), free throw percentage (78.5%) and blocked shots (1.3). He leads the conference in rebounding, field goal percentage, and double-doubles, and ranks fourth in scoring. Nationally he tops NCAA Division III in field goal percentage.
The Bucs finished the 2012-13 season with a 12-11 overall record, including 10-8 in Midwest Conference play. Their 12 wins were the most since the 2001-02 season while their ten conference victories were the most since the 1992-93 season.
