Fireside Chat takes on serious subject; campus community invited

December 4, 2012

Members of Phi Kappa Psi hope that you can join them as we honor the memory of a Beloiter lost 10 years ago.

The Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity invites the campus community to one of its Fireside Chats, Wednesday (Dec. 5) at 7 p.m. in the Phi Psi House (810 College St.). Tonight's speakers are Mike and Maggie, the parents of David Byrd-Felker’04.

David was a philosophy and Spanish double major, a founding member of Voodoo Barbie, and a Phi Psi brother. David studied abroad in Quito, Ecuador during his second semester of his sophomore year—spring 2002. While in Ecuador, David worked with children and spent that the summer exploring Ecuador before planning  to returning to Beloit. However, only a couple weeks before he was scheduled to return, David disappeared, never to be seen again.

His parents will be sharing their son's Beloit story, the story of his disappearance, and how they have chosen to honor his memory by creating the David's Educational Opportunity Fund.

The fund grants educational scholarships to poor Ecuadorian children who show academic promise, but otherwise could not afford schooling. In fact, this year, the fund will see its first two college scholarship recipients graduate. One is an Education major, and the other is an environmental studies major.

Donations will be accepted at the event, and light refreshments will be served.
