Second Annual Giving Day a Great Success

The Beloit College community is generous and showed its heart and soul during its second annual Giving Day on Wednesday, April 20, 2016. In just 24 hours, the college raised over $65,000 from more than 450 supporters.

Not only did the gifts far surpass the original goal of $25,000, the event also raised $25,000 more than last year. Beloit is touched by the fantastic response received from supporters and is grateful to be backed by such a strong foundation of alumni, parents, faculty, staff, and friends. These gifts help make ‪#‎BeloitPossible for the next generation of Turtles, Bucs, and Beloiters.

The unconditional support, enthusiastically offered by our alumni, parents, and friends is a tribute to the character of our community, and the value that we all collectively recognize in the mission we seek to advance. We at Beloit are privileged to have a community so willing to invest in the future of our great institution, and our students. For this, we are grateful,” said Mark Wold’95, Senior Director of Alumni & Parent Relations and Annual Support.

Thank you to all who supported Beloit College’s second annual Giving Day. As College President Scott Bierman often says, it’s “turtles all the way down.”

Meet Chynna Haas, academic support coordinator in SSS

November 19, 2012 at 8:00 pm

Chynna Haas 1

Name: Chynna Haas

Occupation: Academic support coordinator with Student Support Services.

Hometown/current residence: I was born and raised in Beloit. I then attended my undergrad in Madison, returning to Beloit for a year after graduation before moving to New York City for 10 months. I moved back to Beloit this past June.

You may have seen me: At one of the talks or workshops I facilitated around social identity and community organizing over the past couple months. I also may have helped you schedule a meeting with Dean Davies while I was the temporary executive secretary in her office during August/September.

What are a few of your favorite things? Lazy Sundays spent reading in bed, chocolate cake, and a great-fitting pair of jeans

Any do-over requests to lodge with the universe? Explain. The last episode of the TV show Lost. Seriously, Universe, why? My do-over request is that you re-inspire Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse to write a series ending that actually addresses the island's mysteries.

Favorite meal? Though I try to eat a plant-based/vegan diet, my absolute favorite meal (and weakness) is my mom's meatloaf, mashed potatoes and gravy, corn, and dinner rolls.

What can’t you live without? I like to believe that there are no material things that I couldn't live without, so I would have to say that I can't live without laughing.  I always manage to find at least one thing per day that cracks me up. The amount that I laugh in the course of the day is how I gauge if I'm truly going out of my way to connect with people.

Any advice? Trust your gut! It is always right.

What do you do in your free time? In my free time, I am usually writing, eating, cooking, sleeping, thrifting, or crafting.

Who are your top-three fantasy dinner party guests? Hillary Clinton, Allison Janney, and Roseanne Barr.

What gets you up in the morning? It's definitely not the seven alarms I set and manage to shut off without waking up! I get out of bed each morning because I love connecting with people and hearing their stories. Whether it's at work, in line at the store, or while pumping gas, I'm always listening to people, trying to learn more about them and thinking about how their stories connect with broader issues.

Who are your heroes? Ada Deer, Ina May Gaskin, and bell hooks.

Which talent would you most like to have? I really wish I had some sort of musical talent. I would love to play the guitar!

What’s your favorite hidden gem here in the area? The Angel Museum, which is located literally across from the College on Pleasant Street. It has over 11,000 angels, including 600 Black angels from Oprah Winfrey's collection.  I've volunteered with the museum for several years and have had the privilege of meeting some of the most dedicated and interesting people in this area. I highly recommend checking it out.

What’s the number one thing on your bucket list? Set out on a trip with no destination in mind, just going wherever seems interesting and is recommended along the way.

Proudest moment? Becoming the first person in my family to earn a B.A. when I graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

What are you most looking forward to? Connecting with more students in my new role at Beloit College. I am consistently impressed by the intellect, inquisitiveness, and passion of the students here.
