The college’s relationship with China extends to the earliest part of the last century, and continues today, as President Bierman is currently in the country visiting alumni, parents, and prospective students in Shanghai.
Several alumni are traveling from Hong Kong and other places in Asia to join Bierman at these events; over the weekend, he headed to Beloit’s partner university, Henan University in Kaifeng, with Betsy Brewer, Warren Palmer, and Daniel Youd for that university’s centennial celebration.
Below, President Bierman shares a picture from his travels.
From the left are economics professor and Coleman Foundation Chair in Entrepreneurship Warren Palmer, director of international education Betsy Brewer, the president, and Eddie Tang’84 with a bust of Wen Zhi Tang.
“Wen Zhi Tang was president of what we now call Jiao Tong University in Shanghai and is Eddie's great-grandfather,” Bierman wrote. “Eddie's grandfather is the famous CY Tang '18 who is the first Chinese student to attend Beloit (encouraged to come to Beloit by his father). Eddie's father was Xiao-Xuan (Edward) Tang'49.”
The president is expected to return to Beloit on Wednesday.
