From your inbox: social media meets law in upcoming lecture

February 16, 2012

On Tuesday (Feb. 21) at 4 p.m. in the Porter Brown Auditorium (Science Center 150), Daithí Mac Síthigh of the University of East Anglia will present “Facebook, Twitter, and the Law.”

A description of the lecture points out that, “The success of social networking services brings with it a range of interesting legal challenges.” Some of these issues, like free speech, are not exclusive to the Internet, but others—like the idea of what is private and what is public, and service provider responsibilities in a medium that has only existed for a matter of decades—have become more high-profile.

This lecture will consider a selection of legal and political disputes in which Facebook, Twitter, and other services have been involved (from the U.S., Europe, and elsewhere), and consider how we can learn lessons from similar disputes in the earlier days of the Internet.

If you’re a professor interested in having Dr. Síthigh visit your class, contact either Jill Budny or Steven Huss-Lederman.
