Meet: India John’12, tearin' up the Frisbee field, among other things

January 3, 2012

Name: India John’12
Major/Minor: Environmental geology/journalism
Hometown/residence: Nashville, Tenn.
You may have seen me: Riding my orange bike-share bike around, hanging outside OEC or Peace and Justice houses, up very late on Thursday nights in Pearsons, tearin’ up the Frisbee field (literally and figuratively - sorry to Karris, Aldrich, and Phys Plant!), or in my living room watching you as you walk past on your way to Walgreens.
You may have heard me: Laughing, anywhere. I'm told I have a distinctively loud laugh.
What are a few of your favorite things? Horchata (holla at Ian Hedges and his shout out to Azteca - too true!), colors, earrings, my (miniscule) southern accent (it's y'all, NOT ya'll!), road trips, Glacier National Park, the great outdoors, family, family-esque communities, Avatar, and The Last Airbender.
Who are your top-three fantasy dinner party guests? Clarkibelle, my father's grandmother whom I never got to meet, but she was a firecracker apparently; Bill Hunt--again a family friend on my father's side, an inventor, an adventurer, and a prankster. Lordy, the stories that man could tell! And Roy Chapman Andrews--the combination of the Beloit connection and his life in general are too much to resist.
Which talent would you most like to have? Musical ability of any sort, playing any sort of instrument. I took piano and violin lessons growing up and my family can tell you how little I improved over years and years of lessons. It just ain't my thang.
What’s your favorite hidden gem here in the area? Nygren Wetland Preserve. It is located in Rockton, Ill., only about 7 miles south of Beloit across the state line. It's a beautiful half-hour bike ride along South Bluff Road (wear a helmet, there is not much shoulder!) to the 721-acre wetland/prairie preserve owned and managed by the Natural Land Institute. Go check out the overlook, hike the trails, and see all the wonderful wildlife.
