Welcomes and well-wishes abounded at Convocation 2011 Monday afternoon, the official kick-off to the new academic year.
Much was made of the fact that the incoming class will be the first to experience the college’s newly minted graduation requirements, and Provost and Dean of the College Ann Davies reminded those in attendance, “You’re embedded in the rich history of those who came before you.”
At the same time, President Bierman told the class of 2015 that he expects them to be trailblazers, giving shape to the new curricular requirements. “There is no path other than the one you will set over the next four years,” he said. “As long as you are Beloiters, you are the way.”
He also riffed on the Mindset List (video), making up his own list for the week that new student orientation took place.
In her address, new Dean of Students Christina Klawitter recalled her own experiences as a first-year at Convocation some 17 Augusts ago (where, in a felicitous turn of events, former dean Bill Flanagan served as her FYI instructor), and noted the importance of perseverance and mentorship in navigating life in college.
And, as no Convocation would be complete without it, Susan Rice led the entire assemblage in rousing renditions of “Domine Salvum Fac” and “Oh, Beloit.”
