Chemistry professor honored by alma mater

June 22, 2011

Kohnstamm Professor of Chemistry Brock Spencer’s 50th college reunion was special for reasons beyond reuniting with old classmates.

In June, Spencer received Carleton College’s Distinguished Achievement Award, given to Carleton alumni who reach a level of superior achievement in their professional or community-service endeavors. Spencer graduated from the liberal arts college—located in Northfield, Minn.—in 1961.

In nominating her colleague for this honor from his alma mater, Beloit biology professor Yaffa Grossman pointed out his “tireless” leadership in the construction of the new LEED-Platinum Center for the Sciences and deconstruction of Chamberlin Hall.

As noted in Carleton College’s citation, Spencer has also received many professional awards, and has engaged in work and research with national and international entities ranging from the National Science Foundation to collaboration with researchers at the University of Lund in Sweden and Cambridge University.
