SECURITY SAYS: Update your info for new alert system

August 16, 2010

Via Bruce Heine, assistant director of security:

In an attempt to make campus even safer for students, staff and faculty, Beloit College has invested in a new emergency alert system that will allow the security office and other campus personnel to quickly contact the campus community in the event of an emergency. The new system allows college officials to swiftly distribute phone and e-mail alerts, and eventually text messages, to the college community in the event of an emergency on or near campus.

What you should know:

  • The system will only be used in the event of an emergency or credible threat to students, employees and the campus itself
  • It will "echo" Beloit's tornado warning sirens, which are triggered whenever a tornado warning is issued for Rock County
  • All alert messages will include detailed information intended to help you respond to, or avoid, a potential threat or dangerous situation
  • All messages will be clearly identified as “Beloit College” alerts
  • The system will be tested in early September and early February. The test time/date will be announced in advance
  • Students and employees will be contacted at the phone numbers listed in the Datatel system, as well as at their campus e-mail addresses
  • All students and employees will be loaded into the system. For safety reasons, there is no opt-out option

Tomorrow, Human Resources will be notifying all employees to ask that they update their contact information and add cell phone numbers to the system. Thank you in advance for your participation and assistance.
