After/Words: art meets poetry at the Wright Museum

December 2, 2013 at 7:34 am

After/Words is the culmination of a semester-long journey partaken by English 210, a poetry workshop under the guidance of Francesca Abbate, the 2013-14 George S. Parker Curator.

Early in the semester, students enrolled in the course visited the Wright Museum of Art and, working closely with Museum Director Joy Beckman and Curator James Pearson, chose works of art from the Wright Museum’s collections that spoke to the respective students. After that, the students researched their chosen work, spent time with it, mulled over it, let it consume them, and, over the course of a number of weeks, produced a series of poems that, in some way, relate to the work.

The exhibit includes works by Salvador Dali, Francisco de Goya, and Wasiily Kandinsky to name a few. The exhibit opens on Thursday, and an opening reception from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. will include a live reading of the student poems.
