Meet: Claire Alrich’13, a Chelonia dancer, choreographer, and costume designer

January 28, 2013 at 9:11 pm

You can see Claire and other student dancers/choreographers in Chelonia this Thursday, Friday, and Saturday at 8 p.m., or Sunday at 2 p.m.

Mee

Name: Claire Alrich’13

Hometown: Evanston, Ill.

Major/minor: English (rhetoric and discourse) and dance.

What brought me to Beloit: The small class sizes, being a face not a number, and a great winter-weekend prospie visit.

My favorite class so far, and why you should take it: Modern III with Chris Johnson. I took this class four times, and each time it got better. Dance classes at Beloit go beyond steps and shapes; they create connections across disciplines and challenge me to look at life in new ways.

You may have seen me: At the Hendricks Center, the costume shop, C-haus.

The best book I’ve read at Beloit: Free Play by Stephen Nachmanovitch.

What are you working on? Creating my own dance show/collaborative arts, one-night-only event to occur at the end of the semester.

Favorite meal? A fresh heirloom tomato (Kellog’s breakfast variety or Cherokee purple) with cream cheese on a Bagels Forever egg bagel.

What can’t you live without? Eggs. I eat a lot of eggs. Also my pink Nike headband; it’s vital for the winter months.

Any advice? Well a fortune cookie recently told me “You can’t please everyone. Please yourself first.” I thought that wasn’t bad advice for a fortune cookie.

What do you do in your free time? What do you wish you did in your free time? I like to make crafts of many sorts (books, clothes, hair scrunchies); if I had more free time I would design and sew clothing and sell them.

Who are your top-three fantasy dinner party guests? I want all my friends from different places in the world and in my life to be in one place for a dinner and dance party.

What gets you up in the morning? Sunlight. My apartment has the best morning light. And coffee. Also the thought of breakfast.

What’s your favorite hidden gem here in the area? A three-way tie between the Nest Egg during Christmas, the store called My Apartment, and Club Impulse.

Proudest moment? Designing and building 11 Tina Turner-inspired dresses for the Gina T’ai dance “There’s only one Tina” my sophomore year; it introduced me to the many wonders of costuming and fringe.

What’s your karaoke standard? “Total Eclipse of the Heart” by Bonnie Tyler.

What are you most looking forward to? Performing in Chelonia, senior week, and traveling to Prague with the dance program this summer!
