Denim Decoration for Denim Day
Every Friday leading up to Denim Day, denim decorating stations will be set up in Java Joint from 4pm-6pm. Come, be creative and decorate some denim with powerful messages of support for survivors of sexual assault, stories of hope and statements of prevention. Art supplies and snacks will be provided.
On April 26th, the decorated denim will be displayed across campus. A brief presentation will begin at 12:30pm in front of Pearsons. (Rain location, Weeks lounge in Pearsons)

History of Denim Day
Denim Day was started by “Peace Over Violence” as a result of a ruling on a sexual assault case that occurred in Italy 18 years ago. Denimday.org website describes the history of the day.
“The campaign was originally triggered by a ruling by the Italian Supreme Court where a rape conviction was overturned because the justices felt that since the victim was wearing tight jeans she must have helped her rapist remove her jeans, thereby implying consent.”
Women in Italy immediately reacted to the verdict and wore jeans in protest and solidarity. Since then, wearing jeans on Denim Day has become a symbol against destructive attitudes about sexual assault.
