Overtime Win Puts Exclamation Point on Buccaneer Women's Lacrosse Home Finale

Buccaneer Women's LacrosseBeloit, WI -- The Beloit College Women's Lacrosse team closed the home portion of their schedule with some excitement, holding on for a 13-12 Midwest Women's Lacrosse Conference overtime win over Aurora University at Strong Stadium on Saturday.

The Buccaneers built a two-goal lead twice in the first half but Aurora came back both times, the second time with the final two goals of the half to tie it at 5-all.  Libby Storrick had a pair of goals in the first 30 minutes while Michelle Dillon, Sarah Pipal and Sara Fithian also had scores.

After Aurora scored first in the second half to go on top Beloit scored five unanswered goals to move in front 10-6 with 20 minutes left.  But the Spartans countered with five of the half's final six goals to tie it at 11, the last goal coming with 1:36 left in regulation.  Fithian had five goals in the half, including a run of four straight that gave the Bucs their cushion, while Marie Bonine scored the other.

In the extra time, consisting of six minutes with the teams trading sides after three minutes, Michelle Dillon put Beloit up for good with a goal 34 seconds in, assisted by Bonine.  Fithian added some insurance at the 3:31 mark.  But it wasn't quite over yet.  After the change of sides, Aurora made it a one-goal game with 2:10 remaining.  But the Bucs held on for the win, running out the final two-plus minutes.

Fithian finished with seven goals, the fifth time she's hit the mark in her two seasons.  Dillon and Storrick both added two goals, with Storrick also recording two assists.  Celeste Jenkins got the win in net, making four saves through the second half and extra time.  Bonine had two saves in the first half.

The Buccaneers travel to the University of Dubuque on Wednesday for another MWLC game.  Faceoff is at 4:00 pm
