Redlands, CA -- The Beloit College Women's Basketball team finished up their West Coast trip on Saturday night with a 69-55 loss to Chapman University in the Redlands Winter Classic.
Lauren McNanna scored 23 points while also putting her name in the Beloit Record Books. With 4:21 left in the opening half McNanna made a pair of free throws to put her alone atop the career free throws made list, breaking a tie with former record-holder Karen Walker (1989-93). McNanna heads back to Wisconsin with 337 career makes from the charity stripe.
In a first half of runs, Chapman broke away from a narrow lead with an 8-1 spurt that gave them a 16-8 lead. Beloit answered with a 6-0 run to pull back within 16-14 midway through the half but the Panthers answered that run with an 11-2 five-minute burst to lead 27-16 at 7:52. The Bucs had the final response of the half, pulling back within 29-28 with a 12-2 run with just under three minutes left. CU led 33-31 at the break.
The start of the second half stayed close before the Buccaneers had a little burst to go up 37-35 on a Lana Wieseman fast break layup three minutes in, their first lead since the 17:17 mark of the opening half. But the game-deciding run came from Chapman, who shot 55.2% from the field in the second 20 minutes, a 23-8 run that included a 10-0 spurt that put them up by 15. The lead hit a high of 17 with 1:44 remaining as Beloit could never get closer than 11 down the stretch.
Besides McNanna's 23, Wieseman and Alyssa Capecci each added seven points. Jenna Larsen had a team-high six rebounds.
After getting back home the Bucs will have a little time before getting back into Midwest Conference play on January 8 at St. Norbert College, the first of three straight MWC road contests.
