Beloit, WI -- The Beloit College Volleyball team was on the verge of forcing a fifth and deciding set but Grinnell College snatched it away late for a 3-1 win in Flood Arena on Tuesday night in the Midwest Conference opener for both squads.
The Pioneers took the first set 25-20 as they busted away from a 19-all tie to score the final six points for the win. But the Bucs evened things up in the second set with a 25-23 victory. Beloit led 24-18 and held off GC down the stretch.
Grinnell led 19-15 late in the third set before exploding for six straight points to close it out 25-15 and go up 2-1 in the match. In the fourth set, the Buccaneers led 24-20 before the Pioneers rallied, scoring four straight to tie it at 24-24 and then finally securing the match with the last two points after it was tied 26-26.
Rachel Skoza and McKenzie Falker each had ten kills in the match as the Bucs had a .148 hitting percentage. Megan Slavish added nine kills. Carolyn Stransky had 36 assists and added two service aces. Falker and Julianne Gruenhagen each had 11 digs while Slavish had ten. Emma Kozera had four blocks, one solo, while Skoza had three solo blocks.
The Bucs will look to right the ship on the road this weekend with two MWC matches, playing at Monmouth College on Friday night and at Illinois College on Saturday afternoon.
