2014 MWC ClassicEast Peoria, IL -- The rainy weather put an end to the 2014 Midwest Conference Softball Classic on Sunday with one game left to be played.  The Beloit College Softball team ended the weekend at 2-3, with wins over Knox College and Grinnell College.

The Bucs defeated Knox 6-5 and lost to Cornell 3-0 on Friday; lost to Lake Forest 8-0 and topped Grinnell 8-0 on Saturday and lost to Monmouth 8-0 on Sunday morning before the rains came during their final game against Illinois College.

Against Knox, the Buccaneers scored in the top of the first when the first two hitters - Tala Cornell and Taurie Burns - doubled to lead off the game.  But KC scored twice in the second and three times in the third to take a 5-1 advantage.  Beloit tied it at 5-all with a four-run fourth on Mikayla Martin's two-run home run, the first of her career, and a two-run double by Cornell.  They got what proved to be the game-winner one inning later on Emily Dorjath;s sacrifice fly to left, scoring Jen Zucker.  Zucker got the win with four innings of hitless relief, striking out seven and walking one.

Cornell broke up a scoreless dual in the second game Friday with one run in the sixth and two in the seventh.  April Apfelbaum singled with two out in the bottom of the seventh to break up a CC no-hitter.

The Bucs did fall to a no-hitter in the first game Saturday against Lake Forest while the Foresters scored twice in the first and three times in both the second and fourth.

Beloit bounced back after the loss to LFC with the win over Grinnell.  Burns had a sac fly and Megan Salm an RBI groundout in the top of the first to give Zucker all the runs she'd need.  Zucker drove in a run with a groundout in the third to make it 3-0 and then had an RBI single in the fifth as the Buccaneers put the game away.  In addition to Zucker's run-scoring single in the big inning Cornell and Carrie Campbell drew bases-loaded walks and Ashleigh Gasparola had a two-run single.  Zucker lost a no-hitter with one out in the bottom of the fifth.  She finished with 10 strikeouts while walking none.

In the finale, Monmouth scored twice in the first and three times in both the fourth and fifth.  Salm had the lone Beloit hit, a single with two outs in the fourth.

The Buccaneers have a few days off after the long weekend before hosting Benedictine University at the Strong Complex Field for two games on Thursday.  First pitch is at 3:00 p.m.
