Mt. Vernon, IA -- The Beloit College Softball team saw both ends of the spectrum in a pair of non-conference games at Cornell College on Thursday, dropping the doubleheader 1-0 and 17-2.
In the game one pitching duel, hits were at a premium for both Katy Sandt and the Rams' hurler. In the end Cornell finally broke the scoreless tie with a two-out run in the fifth while the Buccaneers were held hitless.
Beloit had two base runners, with Megan Salm drawing a walk in the third and Tara Grode doing the same in the sixth. Sandt allowed five hits while striking out five and walking none.
In game two the Bucs jumped on top in the first with an unearned run. Praises Vega walked and stole second ahead of Kandace Fox, who also walked. Kourtney Kingslien then reached on an error to score Vega. But the Rams erased that lead in the bottom of the inning with four runs. They then scored ten runs in the second, including hitting two home runs, and added a run in the third and two in the fourth.
Beloit got their second run in the fifth when Grode led off with a single and Vega walked. Both advanced a base on a wild pitch before McKenzie Falker singled in Grode to close out the scoring.
The Buccaneers now turn their attention to the Midwest Conference Classic, which will be this Saturday and Sunday in Waukegan, Illinois. Beloit opens play on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. against Illinois College in the first of three games that day. They then play two more on Sunday starting at 12:00 noon.
