Janesville, WI -- The Beloit College Softball went 1-2 on the first day of the Midwest Conference Softball Classic on Saturday at Dawson Park, defeating Grinnell College 8-6 and falling to Monmouth College 4-3 in nine innings and Lake Forest College 8-3.
In their first game of the day against Monmouth, the Scots scored a run in the bottom of the first before Praises Vega tied it up with her second home run of the season in the top of the second.
Beloit took the lead in the sixth on Kourtney Kingslien's bases-loaded walk but MC tied it at 2-all in the bottom of the inning.
The game went extra innings and the Buccaneers grabbed the lead in the top of the ninth on Kingslien's RBI single, scoring Vega. But Monmouth scored twice in the bottom of the inning, the winning run scoring unearned, to walk off with the win.
In game two against Grinnell, the Bucs rallied from a 6-2 deficit with six runs in the sixth, two coming on Lisa McClure's single. Sarah Stariha, Laura Byrne and Vega also had RBIs in the big inning.
Katy Sandt then retired the Pioneers in order in the seventh for the win.
In the final game of the day Beloit scored twice in the second on Byrne's two-run single to grab the lead but LFC scored one in the third and four in the fourth to take the lead for good.
The Bucs tacked on a run in the fifth on an error before the Foresters scored two in the sixth and one more in the seventh to close it out.
Beloit has two more games in the Classic on Sunday, playing Knox College at noon and Illinois College at 2:00 p.m.
