Kissimmee, FL -- The Beloit College Softball team got their 2011 season off to a great start with a 3-0 win in the opener over Mt. St. Joseph. But Baldwin-Wallace spoiled that feeling with a 9-1 win in the second game of the day at the Rebel Spring Games.
Kandace Fox and Katy Sandt led the way in the season-opening win, with Fox clubbing a two-run home run and Sandt allowing just four hits for the shutout.
After stranding a pair of MSJ runners on base in the top of the first, Fox got the Buccaneers all the runs they'd need with one swing, getting the ball up in the wind for the homer to left field. Sarah Stariha, who had singled to lead off the game for Beloit, scored ahead of Fox.
The Bucs got their other run in the fourth when McKenzie Falker drove in Praises Vera with a two-out hit.
Sandt took over from there, allowing two Lions' runners in each inning but not letting them cross the plate. She finished with three strikeouts and five walks.
Stariha and Falker both had two hits, as did Fox, who added a double to her home run.
In the second game of the day, Baldwin-Wallace College broke open a tight game with three runs in both the third and fourth innings.
The Bucs got their run in the sixth when Lisa McClure got her second hit of the game to drive in Tara Grode, who had singled.
Beloit is back at it on Monday, playing Albion College of Michigan first and then Wesley College of Delaware in the nightcap.
