March 15, 2014 at 10:11 pm

Buccaneer Women's LacrosseBeloit, WI -- After a nearly a week in Florida the Beloit College Women's Lacrosse team were happy to get back to the friendly confines of Strong Stadium on Saturday afternoon.  So happy they celebrated with a 17-14 win over Mt. St. Joseph College to open Midwest Women's Lacrosse Conference play.

But it took some late-game scoring to seal it.

The Bucs' Sara Fithian got the Bucs going with the first two goals of the game, both free position, but the Lions answered with back-to-back scores to tie it.  Beloit then rattled off five straight scores - by Michelle Dillon, Libby Storrick, Hannah Drexler, Storrick again and Iris Esquivel - to take a 7-2 lead and control of the game.

But MSJ had other ideas, closing the half with six of the eight goals scored to make it a 9-8 game, Bucs, at the break.  Cate Rubin and Dillon broke up Mt. St. Joseph's half-closing run.

Dillon opened the second half with her third goal of the game but the Lions countered.  Rubin then scored her second goal but this time MSJ's answer was three straight goals to take a 12-11 lead with 20 minutes left.

Beloit tied it at 12 on a Fithian goal but Mt. St. Joseph again countered to retake the lead a minute later.  The Buccaneers then went on a four-goal, three-minute run that decided the outcome, all free position scores.  Storrick did the damage, scoring three straight goals to put the Bucs in front to stay.  Fithian added a goal at 9:05 to make it a 16-13 advantage.

MSJ rallied back to within two with 2:28 left but the Buccaneers held on before Rubin closed it out with nine seconds left for the final score.

Storrick finished with five goals and an assist while Fithian had four goals and Dillon and Rubin three each.  Marie Bonine made six saves in net for the win.

Beloit stays at home when they host Otterbein University at Strong on Tuesday at 5:00 p.m.
