Instead of dealing with cold and snow during their respective Holiday breaks, the Beloit College Men’s and Women’s Basketball teams are heading to an area that enjoyed temperatures in the 80’s very recently. And the only snow to be found is artificially produced.
It’s California or bust for the Buccaneers, as both teams head out for a pair of games around Los Angeles.
The Buccaneer Women will be playing in the University of Redlands Winter Classic along with Chapman University and fellow-MWC foe Ripon College on December 27-28. The Men follow with individual games on December 29 and 30 at the University of La Verne and Redlands.
It’s the first trip to California for both teams since December 29-30, 2005, when they played in the Vanguard University Tournament in Costa Mesa, California. Both teams went 1-1 on that trip, with the Women defeating Rochester Institute of Technology 61-49 before falling to Marymount University of Virginia 72-68 in overtime. The Men lost to host Vanguard 82-68 and topped Goucher College 62-44.
Head coach Jennifer McCormick’s Women’s squad, who are 3-5 with a two-game winning streak, will play host Redlands on the 27th at 7:00 p.m. Pacific time before taking on Chapman at 5:00 p.m. on the 28th.
Brian Vraney’s Buccaneer Men, also 3-5 and on a two-game winning streak, play at La Verne on the 29th at 2:00 p.m. Pacific time before heading the short distance to Redlands for another 2:00 p.m. game on the 30th.
The Redlands Women are 8-2 on the season and have won six straight games following a three-game sweep of a trip to New York from Wednesday thru Saturday, where they defeated New Jersey City, New Rochelle and Staten Island.
Chapman University is 5-3 after splitting a pair of games at the Hawaii Classic in Honolulu on Thursday and Friday, defeating Pacific and losing to Georgetown KY. They play Ripon on the 27th before meeting the Buccaneers.
The University of La Verne is 3-4 and have lost four straight. They host another Wisconsin school, Milwaukee School of Engineering, on the 28th before taking on the Bucs.
The Redlands Men are 4-5 and on a three-game winning streak after Thursday’s win over Williamette OR. They play Calvin College on the 28th before hosting Beloit.
After returning from their trip both squads have several days off before returning to Midwest Conference action on January 8 at St. Norbert College in De Pere.
