Beloit, WI – For the first time since the last century, the Beloit College Track & Field team will host a home Track & Field meet on Saturday when the Beloit Open kicks off at 11:30 a.m. at Karris Track at Strong Stadium.
The four-team meet, featuring the Buccaneers, Carroll University, Knox College and Rockford College, marks the first home meet since April 19, 1997, when the squad hosted the Herb Hodges Invitational.
After that meet, and in the ensuing years, the track surface was deemed unsafe for competition. In the 15 years since a large number of student-athletes have never had the pleasure, or comfort, of competing on familiar ground. But a campaign that raised $3.7 million if gifts spurred the redevelopment of the track, as well as the installation of a new turf playing field and the addition of men’s and women’s Lacrosse teams, has made Saturday’s meet a reality at the newly-named Karris Track at Strong Stadium.
Saturday’s meet is a tune-up for the return of the legendary Beloit Relays, which will return on April 26-27, 2013.
Action Saturday begins with field events starting at 11:30 a.m. Running events will get going at approximately 12:00 noon with the 3000m Steeplechase.
