Comeback Falls Short in Final Minute

January 28, 2014 at 7:12 pm

Steve DowdenRipon, WI -- The Beloit College Men's Basketball team saw their final-minute comeback fall just short in a 76-71 Midwest Conference loss at Ripon College.

The game was close throughout.  The Bucs were up 12-5 midway through the opening half before Ripon scored seven straight to tie it at 12-all.  Beloit then went on a 13-4 run to take a 25-16 advantage at the 5:26 mark.  But the Red Hawks answered with a 15-6 run to close the half with the teams tied at 31.

RC grabbed a 37-33 lead three minutes into the second half but the Buccaneers scored eight of the next 12 points to tie it at 41 with 12:50 left.  The Red Hawks took a 54-49 lead with just over seven minutes left but, again, Beloit came back and took their first lead of the second half at 58-57 on a pair of Steve McAfee free throws.

An 8-0 Ripon run put them up 65-58 with four minutes remaining and held that lead until a 7-2 run pulled the Buccaneers within 71-69 with 1:33 left.  A James Lazarcik jumper made it 72-71, RC, with 44 seconds left.  After a pair of Red Hawk free throws made it 74-71 with 15 ticks remaining, the Bucs, after a timeout, had a good look at a game-tying three-pointer that just rimmed out.  Ripon hit a pair of free throws for the final score.

Lazarcik used a big second half to lead the way with 21 points and eight rebounds.  Steve Dowden hit four three-pointers for a career-high 12 while Sean Fancsali had 11.  Tyler Butke added eight points and seven rebounds.  Rudy Bentley dished out eight assists and Chris Bremner seven.

The Buccaneers look to get a "W" on Saturday when they travel to Cornell College in Iowa.  Tipoff is at 2:00 p.m.
