Winter Haven, FL -- The Beloit College Baseball team put up some bigger numbers but still came away with a split of their doubleheader with Cairn University of Pennsylvania on Monday. The Bucs won game one 15-8 before falling 10-6 in the nightcap.
The opening game was a marathon of sorts as the teams combined for the 23 runs on 19 hits with the Bucs using five pitchers. The seven-inning contest took just under three hours to complete. Beloit jumped up 5-0 in the first two innings before Cairn scored a single run in the bottom of the second and four in the third to tie it up at 5 apiece. But the Buccaneers outscored the Highlanders 10-3 in the final four innings of the seven-inning contest to nail down their second straight win.
Andrew Kane, the final Beloit pitcher, was credited with the win, allowing two hits in two-and-a-third shutout innings with a pair of strikeouts. Ethan Blumenthal, Jake Parrott and Alex Lawrence all drove in three runs to pace the offense.
Game two wasn't much shorter but CU got the upper hand early in this one, scoring nine runs in the first four innings while holding the Buccaneers to solo runs in the third and fourth. Beloit got back into the game with a four-run fifth to pull within 9-6 but that's as close as they could get.
Five different players had RBI's while Lawrence was the only Buc with multiple hits.
Beloit has Junior Varsity games scheduled for Tuesday and Thursday with an off day on Wednesday. They're back in action on Friday with a doubleheader against Cazenovia College of New York in Auburndale. Action begins at 3:00 p.m.
