Auburndale, FL -- The Beloit College Baseball team had their eyes on a comeback to win their Spring Trip finale on Saturday but fell short in a 3-2 loss to Vassar College.
The result ends the Bucs' trip with a 4-3 record.
The Brewers grabbed the lead in the opening inning with a bases-loaded sacrifice fly and held it until Beloit tied it up in the bottom of the fourth when Jon Siil drew a two-out RBI walk after back-to-back-to-back singles by Dan Edwards, Drew Oswald and Jake Majeski loaded the bases.
Vassar took the lead for good in the fifth with two runs, the second coming with two out. The Buccaneers cut the deficit in half in the seventh when Jordan Jaenicke's sacrifice fly to right scored Siil, who had walked and advanced to third on a wild pitch and a fielder's choice.
But that's as close as Beloit could get. Mike Ross singled and pinch-runner Al Loth stole second in the eighth with one out but was stranded. Mike Kovach singled with two out in the ninth but a fly out ended the game.
Grant Henricksen took the loss. Andrew Edwards started and went the first four, giving up one run and two hits while striking out four and walking four.
Jaenicke and Dan Edwards each had two hits. Siil had a pair of walks and also threw out three VC runners attempting to steal second, two in the seventh inning.
The Bucs are now off until March 21 when they travel to Wisconsin Lutheran College to open their Northern schedule. The home opener is scheduled for March 25 against North Central College at The Ballpark at Strong Stadium.
