Kissimmee, FL -- The Beloit College Baseball team opened their 2010 season in rousing style, scoring a pair of victories in the Central Florida Invite.
The Bucs defeated St. Vincent College 28-1 in their opener before shutting down Widener University 8-0 in the nightcap at the ESPN Wide World of Sports.
Against Widener, Matt Bartz got Beloit going with a two-run home run in the second. Mike Ross had a two-run single in a three-run eighth and a two-run double in a three-run ninth to seal the win.
Alex Norman threw six innings of three-hit ball, striking out five and walking three, before Chris Welborn finished up the shutout with a save, going the final three innings. He struck out three.
Ryan Schmitz finished the game 3-4.
In the opener, the Buccaneers poured it on early and set a team record with the 28 runs. Their 23 RBI's tied the school record.
They opened with four in the first and seven in the third to decide the outcome in the first few innings.
Hunter Nelson had a two-run double and Ross a two-run homer in the first while Schmitz had a two-run single to highlight the third.
The Bucs got five more in the fourth, all unearned, and added nine in the sixth to set the runs and RBI records.
Andrew Heer's three-run double highlighted the big sixth inning.
Jordan DeGeorge got the win with five innings of two-hit pitching, striking out four. He gave up SVC's lone run in the second, unearned.
Schmitz finished with a 6-7 day at the plate while Ross had six RBI's.
The Buccaneers take on 21st-ranked Rose-Hulman College on Monday in Auburndale. First pitch is at 12:00 noon EST.
