working to obtain Ph.D. in biology
Since the fifth grade, Christine Brown knew she wanted to be a biologist, but she had no idea what it really took to become one until she came to Beloit.
Christine’s research projects at the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory in Colorado were some of her most influential experiences as a student majoring in ecology, evolution, and behavioral biology. She spent four summers there with Beloit’s former Assistant Professor of Biology Brett Woods, studying yellow-bellied marmots, hiking, and tracking animals.
The McNair Scholar Program also proved instrumental in preparing Christine for her future, because it helped her with everything from giving elevator speeches to writing her senior thesis.
Christine, who captained the basketball and volleyball teams at Beloit, is now a graduate student at North Carolina State University, working to obtain a Ph.D. in biology. Her goal is to become a biology professor at a small liberal arts college like Beloit.
“I love teaching and got my first teaching experiences here at NC State, but I feel like I’m using a lot of strategies my professors at Beloit used,” says Christine.
