Buccaneer Women's Soccer Suffers Setback, but Hope Still Remains

October 28, 2015

Beloit, WI -- A cold, driving rain and strong winds didn't help the Beloit College Women's Soccer team on Wednesday at the Strong Complex Soccer Field against Carroll University.

The Pioneers, who have already secured a spot in the four-team Midwest Conference Tournament, scored twice early and went on to a 4-1 win that dimmed the hopes of the Buccaneers for the last spot in the Tourney field.  Dimmed them, but didn't completely snuff them out.

A Bucs' win in their regular-season finale at Grinnell College on Saturday coupled with a Knox College loss to Cornell College in Galesburg, Illinois, the same day gets Beloit that final spot.

Wednesday, the Pioneers scored the only goals they'd need at 7:50 and 13:47 of the opening half and then added two more goals in a span of less than a minute in the second half to seal the win.

The Buccaneers scored their lone goal on a penalty kick when Megan McCabe, playing her final home game, converted with just under 15 minutes left.  McCabe and Enid Gongora, who is injured, are the only seniors for the Bucs.

CU out-shot Beloit 16-6 while the Bucs had four corner kicks to the Pioneers' three.  Haylee Irwin made seven saves in net for the Buccaneers.

Beloit heads to Grinnell  Saturday for the last game of the regular season.  Kickoff in Iowa is at 11:00 a.m.
