Beloit, WI -- The Beloit College Women's Lacrosse team celebrated the first Senior Day in program history with an exciting late-game win to close out the 2016 season Sunday at Strong Stadium, topping Wartburg College 9-8.
Senior Vanessa Pena scored the game-winner, her third goal of the season, with 1:47 remaining in regulation and the Buccaneers held off the Knights in the final minute for the victory.
Pena certainly made her fellow seniors - Samantha Schonberger, Lauren Whitley, Sara Fithian and Libby Storrick - happy as the five played their final game for the Bucs.
Hannah Drexler got things going just eight seconds into the game followed by a free-position goal by Fithian and a tally by Storrick to make it 3-0 less than three minutes in. Wartburg broke the run at 22:27 but Fithian (Tate Mitchell) restored the three-goal lead at 17:18. The Knights scored three of the final four goals in the half but Drexler's second score of the game maintained the lead at the break, 5-4.
Storrick scored her second goal five minutes into the second half before the Knights scored three straight goals to take their first lead of the game at 7-6 with 16:37 left. Marie Bonine (Storrick) tied it up at 7 at the 12:39 mark and Arisbeth Sanchez (Storrick) regained the lead for Beloit with 6:49 left. But Wartburg evened the game at 8 with 4:01 remaining, setting the stage for Pena's game-winner.
Celeste Jenkins made 13 saves in goal for the Bucs and picked up a team-best four ground balls.
The Buccaneers finish the season 3-11 overall, 3-6 in the Midwest Women's Lacrosse Conference.
