Beloit, WI -- The Beloit College Women's Lacrosse team battled their way through several short blast of stinging snow and sleet to defeat Cornell College 12-5 in a Midwest Women's Lacrosse Conference game at Strong Stadium Saturday afternoon.
The Bucs jumped in front for good just over 30 seconds into the game when Sara Fithian (Hannah Drexler) scored her first of a record-tying seven goals. She then made it 2-0 20 seconds later (Drexler) before the Rams got on the board. Fithian scored goal number three at 25:41 and Casey Ryan made it 4-1 at 16:32. Following Cornell's second goal of the game at 9:57 Fithian (Drexler) and Tate Mitchell scored to make it 6-2 at the half.
Vanessa Pena and Fithian made it 8-2 four minutes into the second half, completing a five-goal run stopped by CC's goal at 25:26. Drexler started a three-goal run at 24:58 that made it 11-3, followed by Mitchell (Ryan) and Fithian. Cornell scored back-to-back at 6:31 and 5:12 before Fithian closed out the scoring just before the clock hit 0:00.
Marie Bonine made eight saves in goal and had five ground balls while Mitchell also grabbed five ground balls. Drexler had four caused turnovers and Ryan three.
The Buccaneers look to maintain their momentum Wednesday when they host North Central College on Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m. at Strong.
