Minneapolis, MN -- The Beloit College Women's Lacrosse team had a different way to open their 2016 season with two games on one day, falling at Augsburg College 19-10 in the season opener, which was also the Midwest Women's Lacrosse Conference opener, before falling to Hamline University in their second game, also played at Augsburg, 13-7.
In Mallory Bahr's head coaching debut against Augusburg, AC scored the game's first goal before Beloit took the lead with back-to-back scores from Libby Storrick and Hannah Drexler 40 seconds apart. Augsburg tied it at 2-all 15 seconds later but Storrick got the Bucs the lead back with her second goal, on a free position shot, at 21:44. The Augies scored two straight to retake the lead but the Buccaneers answered with three straight goals from Sara Fithian and twice by Storrick to make it 6-4 Beloit. Augsburg then took command with eight unanswered goals to head to halftime with a 12-6 advantage.
AC increased their run to 10 unanswered with two scores to open the second half before Fithian stopped the run at 25:57 to make it a 14-7 game. Marci McClenon stopped a two-goal run from Augsburg at the 12:18 mark before the Augies got three straight goals to close out their scoring. Arisbeth Sanchez (Storrick) and McClenon finished up the scoring in the final 7:20.
Marie Bonine finished with nine saves in goal for the Bucs. Drexler led the way with five ground balls while McClenon had four draw controls and Storrick four caused turnovers.
In the second game against Hamline, the Pipers got off to a four-goal lead in the first five minutes but Beloit answered with four goals of their own, three from Storrick and the other from Fithian, to tie it up at 4-apiece midway through the half. HU scored the final three goals of the first 30 minutes to take a 7-4 lead into halftime.
Hamline continued their run into the second half, scoring three more, to make their run six straight, and grabbing a 10-4 lead. Storrick broke the run at the 11:23 mark before the teams traded goals the rest of the way for the final score. Storrick added the last two goals for the Buccaneers at 6:30 and 4:00.
Bonine made 11 saves in goal. Casey Ryan had five ground balls, Storrick four draw controls and Bonine four caused turnovers.
Beloit is now off until they host Concordia Chicago in the home opener at Strong Stadium on Saturday, March 5. Action begins at 1:00 p.m.
