Mt. Vernon, IA -- The Beloit College Women's Lacrosse team grabbed one of the four spots in the upcoming Midwest Women's Lacrosse Conference Tournament after Sunday's 15-5 win at Cornell College.
The Buccaneers built a 9-4 first half lead against Cornell and then solidified it with six goals in the second half while holding the Rams to one.
Michelle Dillon got things started for Beloit less than two minutes into the game. After CC tied it up three minutes later Hannah Drexler and Marci McClenon scored back-to-back to give the Bucs a lead they'd never give up. Cornell pulled back to within one goal at the 19:33 mark before the Buccaneers ran off four straight scores to open a 7-2 advantage. The four in succession came from Casey Ryan, Dillon, Kelley Flint and Celeste Jenkins. The teams then traded goals in the last seven minutes, with Dillon scoring twice, for the 9-4 halftime lead.
Beloit poured it on in the first 11-plus minutes of the second half with five unanswered scores to make it 14-4 with 19:28 remaining. Dillon had three goals in the run while Drexler scored her second. Arisbeth Sanchez's goal started the run. After the Rams scored at 7:20 for their final goal Marci McClenon scored her second of the game with four minutes left to close out the scoring.
Dillon's seven goals tied the Beloit record while her nine points rank second all-time.
Marie Bonine made 13 saves in net while also getting a team-high four ground balls. Flint had four ball controls.
The Buccaneers close the regular season this weekend with their final home game on Thursday against Carroll University at Strong Stadium before traveling to Augsburg College on Sunday. The Carroll game begins at 4:30 p.m. and the game at Augsburg at 11:00 a.m.
