Aurora, IL -- The Beloit College Women's Lacrosse team fell just short on Wednesday afternoon, dropping a 9-8 Midwest Women's Lacrosse Conference game at Aurora University.
The Spartans scored with 4:51 remaining to seal the win and then held Beloit at bay in the final minutes.
The teams traded goals for nearly the entire game. After Aurora scored just over a minute in Michelle Dillon scored on a free position shot to tie it. Hannah Drexler (Dillon) evened it up at 2-all after AU had retaken the lead before the Spartans scored back-to-back to move up 4-2. The Bucs scored their own consecutive goals to tie it at 4 when Dillon and Libby Storrick hit the back of the net midway through the half. Aurora retook the lead at the 10:16 mark but Storrick tied it 1:07 before the end of the half to make it a 5-5 game at the break.
After AU jumped back on top less than a minute into the second half Storrick and Kelley Flint gave the Buccaneers the advantage with 17:43 left. Aurora scored two straight to take an 8-7 lead with 12:09 remaining but Storrick evened it at 8-8 less than three minutes later, setting the stage for the Spartans' game-winner.
Flint, Storrick and Celeste Jenkins each had three ground balls in the game while Flint also had five caused turnovers. Marie Bonine made four saves in net.
Beloit continues its Conference Tournament push this weekend with MWLC road games at Wartburg College on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. and Sunday at Cornell College at 12:00 noon.
