Strong Shooting Not Enough, Bucs Fall 47-63

February 14, 2018

Mount Vernon, Iowa -- Despite shooting 55% (11-20) from the field in the first half, the Women's Basketball Team couldn't gain any ground on the Rams of Cornell College Tuesday night in Mount Vernon, Iowa, eventually falling by a final score of 47-63.

The home team started the game with a 7-0 run before a 3-pointer from junior Kelly McLean (’19 Woodridge, Ill.) at the 7:05 mark got the Bucs on the board. From there, the Bucs would continue to trade baskets with the Rams to end the 1st still trailing by 4 (15-19).

A quick bucket from #11 Shelby Kline (’19 Rockton, Ill.) 10 seconds into the 2nd cut the Rams’ lead to 2 (17-19), but Cornell responded minutes later by scoring 9 straight points to go ahead by 12 (19-31) with 5:10 left to play in the half. Kline would go on to finish with 13 points to lead the Bucs.

In her 3rd game back after suffering a wrist injury, #5 Lauren Glaser (’20 Inverness, Ill.) hit a free throw late in the 2nd quarter to bring the Bucs within single digits (28-37) before the break.

Just as they did to start the game, the Rams came out in the 2nd half looking to score quickly and extended their lead to as high as 17 points (29-46) in the 3rd quarter. The Bucs hot shooting that kept them close in the 1st faded down the stretch, as they were unable to find their way back into the game after shooting just 28% (7-25) in the final 20 minutes.

Fellow Junior Candace Cunningham (’19 Cary, Ill.) joined Kline in double figures, chipping in 11 points and 9 rebounds for the Bucs.

The Bucs will wrap up their season on Saturday when they host the St. Norbert Green Knights at 3:00pm.  This will be senior Day for Beloit and they will be recognizing their four seniors (Julia Moll, Sycamore, IL, Melissa McLean, Woodridge, IL, Tegan Rock, Kansasville, WI, and Jaylan Dunn, Manteno, IL) who will be playing their last game for the Bucs.
