Grinnell, IA. – In a thrilling back-and-forth contest, the Women’s Basketball Team came up just short against the Pioneers of Grinnell College in a 55-59 loss Saturday afternoon.
After a slow 1st quarter that ended with the Bucs trailing by 6 (10-16), Beloit took the lead back with a 7-0 run to start the 2nd. Sophomore Danielle Strejc (’20 Evanston, Ill.) tied the game at 16 with a 3-pointer at the 6:49 mark. Strejc dominated the 2nd quarter in particular, scoring 11 of her 14 points in the frame. The Bucs’ zone defense then slowed the game down after their burst, neutralizing the Pioneer 3-point threat, as the two teams battled to a 27-27 tie at halftime.
Not to be outdone, #10 Shelby Kline (’19 Rockton, Ill.) dropped 16 points in the 3rd to help give the Bucs a slim lead (50-48) heading into the final frame. Beloit led for most of the 4th quarter, until a late Pioneers run pushed them ahead for good with 3:17 left to play.
Kline finished the game with 24 points. #22 Melissa McLean (’18 Woodridge, Ill.) chipped in 10 points and 5 rebounds for the Bucs as well.
The Bucs (3-12, 1-6) resume play on Wednesday, January 17th when they take on the Rams of Cornell College at Flood Arena. Tip-off is at 7:30pm.
